Crawford County Recognized as Certified Connected Community

Crawford County completes technology plan aimed at bridging technology gap, boosting economy, paving the way for improved quality of life
Crawford County, MI – Today, the Crawford County Planning Commission and Connect Michigan present Crawford County as a certified Connected community and release its Technology Action Plan.
Diane Rekowski, Director of the Northeast Michigan Council of Government (NEMCOG) explained that “Expanding broadband access and affordability is one of the main projects for Northeast Michigan’s Regional Prosperity Initiative. One of NEMCOG’s strategic goals is to Provide for Economic Growth and Prosperity in the Northeast Region by maintaining critical infrastructure such as high-speed Internet access, sewer, water, and transportation that is necessary for all aspects of the traditional and new economy. NEMCOG is excited to see Crawford County become a Connected community and continue the work of providing residents and businesses with Internet access. Crawford’s Technology Action Plan sets general community-wide broadband connectivity goals that will support economic development and residential quality of life for many years to come. We look forward to working with Crawford County as they begin to implement their technology plan.”
Crawford County has been working since July 2014 with Connect Michigan on the Connected Community Engagement Program. This initiative assesses the local broadband landscape, identifies connectivity gaps, and establishes technology-driven goals and objectives to increase broadband access, adoption, and use for families, organizations, and businesses throughout the community.
Broadband access, adoption, and use are critical to the future of Crawford County,” said Cris Jones, Chair, Crawford County Planning Commission. “Broadband is not a nice to have; it is a must have.”

The Technology Action Plan sets general community-wide broadband connectivity goals which will support economic development and residential quality of life. The new plan gives the community step-by-step action items to make sure that the goals are met. The plan will also support future broadband expansion and programs that will ensure the community maintains widespread Internet access, adoption, and use.
