Empowering independence: Karen Vosse’s digital journey with Connected Nation
Washington, D.C. (March 17, 2026) – For Karen Vosse, learning how to navigate technology has been about more than just gaining computer skills. It has been about independence, connection, and supporting her family in meaningful ways.
Vosse lives on her own, but her family is never far away. Her daughter and grandchildren live just a couple blocks away, and she plays an active role in their lives. At the same time, she works as caregiver to her mom, who is in her 90s. Balancing these responsibilities requires organization, communication, and confidence, especially in today’s digital world.
Learning skills that make a real difference
Vosse, who recently completed digital skills training, shared how much the experience impacted her.
“I really benefited from the digital skills classes and learned so much,” she said.
She gained practical, everyday technology skills such as adding bookmarks for her most-visited websites, recognizing secure websites, identifying phishing emails, marking suspicious emails as spam, and navigating online portals safely and confidently.
These may seem like small skills, but for Vosse, they were transformative. With guidance from the instructor during an open lab session, she was able to set up her new laptop and begin using it on her own.
These courses are provided by the national nonprofit Connected Nation (CN) through a partnership with AT&T at no cost to participants.
Lifting the load
As a senior herself, Vosse previously relied on her second-oldest daughter to help her log into her company’s online portal to submit her caregiving hours and check work emails. While her daughter was always willing to help, Vosse wanted to manage these responsibilities on her own.
Now, with her new laptop and the knowledge she has gained, Vosse confidently submits her hours online and reads company emails herself. By doing so, she has lifted an important task off her daughter’s shoulders. That independence not only empowers her; it strengthens her entire family.
Staying connected across generations
Living alone doesn’t mean being disconnected. Vosse uses her laptop to stay in close communication with her children and grandchildren. Whether it’s checking messages, looking up information, scheduling appointments, or managing family responsibilities, technology helps her stay involved and engaged.
Her newfound digital skills also allow her to pay bills online, schedule doctors’ appointments, manage important documents, communicate with health care providers, and seek resources and services when needed.
By confidently navigating technology, Vosse can support her daughter and grandchildren while staying on top of her own responsibilities.
A story of confidence and connection
Vosse’s journey shows that it’s never too late to learn something new. With access to digital skills training and a laptop, she has gained confidence, freedom, and a stronger connection to her family.
Her story is a powerful reminder that when seniors are equipped with technology and the knowledge to use it safely, they don’t just adapt; they thrive.
