Ellis County releases results of broadband survey – recommendations include securing internet access for entire county

Ellis County, Texas (January 18, 2023) – Ellis County, in partnership with Connected Nation Texas (CN Texas), has released the results of a broadband assessment survey that demonstrate a community with higher-than-average internet speeds, adoption rates, device ownership, and digital literacy skills. The results were used to develop a Technology Action Plan for the county.

Of the 67.3% of respondents who reported using fixed internet connections, 31.3% stated that service was too expensive. Promoting access to internet subsidy programs, such as the Affordable Connectivity Program, will be key to closing the Digital Divide.

Share information with the community about free public computers and free Wi-Fi in public places.

“Reliable internet access for home and work across our county is a must in today’s world,” said Warren Ketterman, Senior Director of Economic Development for the city of Waxahachie. “Through the efforts of Connected Nation and our survey participants, we are able to identify areas of poor service and will be better positioned to address those areas when federal broadband funding becomes available.”

The broadband survey highlighted the need for digital equity and affordable internet for all. The recommendations include:

  1. Work closely with local service providers to fill in the gap areas providing digital equity.
  2. Using the newly released FCC broadband map, verify where there is and is not coverage.
  3. Establish public and private partnerships with local service providers to provide internet for all.

The broadband engagement is part of the Connected Community Engagement Program administered through CN Texas and funded by The Meadows Foundation. The program empowers local leaders and communities through collaborative, data-driven technology planning. To date, the Connected Engagement Program has helped more than 650 communities across the country build comprehensive Technology Action Plans.
