Celebrating the Women of Connected Nation: Lindsay Conrad
Editor’s note: In honor of Women’s History Month, we are profiling the women at Connected Nation. From leadership roles to internship positions, these women are using their skills and experiences at every level of the organization to fulfill our mission to expand broadband access, adoption, and use to all people.
Bowling Green, Ky. (March 26, 2019) – Following all the twists and turns on the political landscape can be tough enough. So imagine having to tackle the big issue of the Digital Divide while keeping yourself and others up to date on the rapidly changing public policy arena. That’s what Lindsay Conrad, Connected
Nation’s Director of Public Policy, does on a daily basis.
“I work with our state programs and stakeholders to understand and stay abreast of federal broadband policy,” she said. “I also help to develop relevant policy recommendations and research new business opportunities in order to build relationships with states looking to become leaders in the broadband space.”
Conrad has been with Connected Nation for five years—helping to steer leaders and influencers through sometimes rocky waters. She says she’s always had a love for politics, government, and policy.
“The opportunity to improve people’s lives through sound public policy is powerful, and I’m drawn to the research and science behind what makes those policies work,” Conrad said.
She first learned how policy can effect change while studying economics, and after college, she decided to get her master’s degree in economics. She spent several years as a political fundraiser, which she credits for helping her understand government and the importance of relationship-building.
Conrad’s focus eventually shifted to telecommunications policy through her work with Connected Nation. She now offers this advice to young women who are looking to kickstart their own careers:
“Get involved early, learn as much as you can along the way, and focus on building relationships. Practice public speaking when you can, and never underestimate the value of in-person meetings. Consider science-based degrees and pursue relevant internships in a variety of fields.”
