Connected Nation Michigan and Local Tech Company Bring Internet to Rural Michigan Residents
Cheboygan, MI. (August 28, 2019) – Rural Michigan communities are in for a big broadband update thanks to Cherry Capital Communications with the help of Connected Nation Michigan.
On Friday, August 16, Cherry Capital Communications broke ground on a new project to bring fiber internet access to 75 homes near Cheboygan County. These fiber-cables will make it easier for Michigan residents to get access to high-speed internet in their homes.
“Their options here are pretty limited,” Connected Nation Community Technology Advisor Tom Stephenson said. “The technology of fixed wireless is unlicensed and they have old telephone lines, so the speeds that are available with those technologies is now getting to the point where it’s not useful for the residents.”
U.S. Representative Jack Bergman was in attendance to learn more about fiber-optic cables and support the local Michigan organization. He also has introduced the Rural Broadband Connectivity Act (H.R. 6871) to aid in deploying broadband internet access to unserved and underserved areas. This act will help prevent the digital divide in Michigan and keep businesses and families connected.
