Connected Nation’s new research report highlights the importance of digital literacy

Bowling Green, Ky. (March 4, 2025) - Nowadays, nearly every aspect of daily life has some sort of online component, whether it be school, work, shopping, health, or even banking. Unfortunately, not everyone is online, and many others are not equipped with the skills they need to navigate the digital world. As the prevalence of technology continues to rise, those without essential digital skills will struggle to perform basic tasks and may become disconnected from society.

But what does it mean to be “digitally literate?” Is that definition the same across regions, ages, or job titles? And who benefits from increasing those skills? Families? Communities? The nation? What is the benefit of having a more digitally literate population?

Connected Nation (CN) explores these questions in its latest report, “Beyond access: Learning the digital skills to thrive online.” In this report, we look at how the term “digital literacy” has been defined by different sectors, as well as the impact that digital training programs have had on participants, sponsors, and communities.

“Lots of people talk about how digital skills can be a gateway to better jobs and more opportunities, but it’s hard to put your finger on exactly what that means,” said Chris McGovern, CN’s Director of Research. “We thought it was important to find out exactly how individuals see ‘digital skills’ from a variety of viewpoints.”

To gain a more in-depth understanding of the impact digital training programs have on those receiving training, CN researchers partnered with training participants and hosts to see how these skills improve people’s everyday lives.

Digital literacy initiatives and their impact

CN has a long history of providing digital literacy training to prevent individuals and communities from falling deeper into the Digital Divide. Over the last 24 years, CN has partnered with more than 500 organizations to provide in-person and virtual trainings to thousands of people across the country.

CN’s work continues today through several important initiatives, including Digital Skills Training and Teens Teach Tech, powered by AT&T. These programs provide participants with the online skills that they need to navigate today’s digital world. Participants leave with the essential knowledge to effectively use computers, mobile devices, and valuable online tools like email and videoconferencing applications. They are also taught how to stay safe online and avoid getting caught in scams.

Below are a few thoughts from individuals who have participated in CN’s Digital Skills workshops:

“I learned how to bookmark frequently visited websites to reduce the number of open tabs in my Google Chrome app. Hopefully, this will help keep my mobile device organized and improve its speed and performance.”

“I was so happy to be a part of this class. I’m in my 50s and going back to university — technology has changed so much! I wanted a refresher.”

“During this class, I realized how many times I have gotten emails and texts that are scammers trying to get my information.”

“My favorite aspect of the day was learning about videoconferencing, which gave me the confidence to stay connected with family and friends across the country, especially my great-grandchildren.”

Other key takeaways include:

  • Both children and adults greatly benefit from being digitally competent. In fact, studies suggest that those possessing digital skills have better educational and employment outcomes, as well as increased knowledge and self-efficacy.
  • Participants who complete CN’s Digital Literacy workshops report having enhanced digital literacy skills, a greater sense of cybersecurity awareness, increased workforce readiness, and an improved ability to connect with their community.
  • Digital skills can revolutionize a person’s life by creating new opportunities in their career, education, health, and social life.
