Virtual (May 21, 2020) – Digital Works (DW) launched a new, more user-friendly website in January 2020 to better help people reach their digital training and job placement goals. This week, the new website was honored by national organization PR News as a finalist for Site Redesign. You can find the website at www.digitalworksjobs.org.
“We felt it was important to make the site easier to use for people who may be new to a digital platform,” said Chris Pedersen, VP of Development and Planning, Connected Nation (CN). “The Digital Works program is focused on providing both training and job placement assistance for telework positions. Remote work has so many positive ramifications—from providing jobs to those living in rural areas to helping military spouses find positions that can move with them to improving the tax base for struggling communities. Our challenge was finding a way to make accessing this program easier for more people and communities.”
DW was developed by national nonprofit Connected Nation (CN) to fill today’s high demand for workers who have digital skills and the desire to work remotely. The new website was one of three finalist chosen nationally in the Site Redesign category.
“The program was launched in 2013 and, in late 2019, it was clear that we needed to make the site more accessible to more people,” said Jessica Denson, Communications Director, CN. “Working with website developer, Hatfield Media, we came up with a more streamlined approach for how those visiting the site could use it and more easily find the information they needed. Being able to access this program is, perhaps, even more important now that we are dealing with a pandemic—a time when many individuals and families are looking for work they can do from home.”
Among other things, users of the site can find details on how to apply to take part in the program, how communities can bring DW to their area, how companies can become an “employer of choice”, and testimonials from graduates who have gone before them.
“We work with more than 70 companies nationwide, and we have had graduates from just about every walk of life. From senior citizens to young adults to those with physical challenges,” said Tammy Spring, Operations Manager, DW. “We opened a new facility in early February in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, to meet the needs of military spouses and veterans. When COVID-19 closures began to happen, we moved those classes to a virtual setting, and, thanks for flexibility of our funders, we were able to begin offering these particular classes to ALL Kentucky veterans, spouses of veterans, and military spouses. We also moved the program from a 4-week course to a 2-week course to help graduates get into the job pipeline quicker.”
The Fort Campbell classes are supported through a contract with the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet and additional funding from the Department of Veterans Affairs and AT&T. To date, every graduate from these classes has received one or multiple job offers.
This has shown us that with funding support DW can provide online training and job placement assistance that is effective and has immediate results.
