Faster Internet & Lower Cost: How IXPs are changing the way communities get connected

Bowling Green, Ky. (February 23, 2023) – Connected Nation and Newby Ventures recently announced a new partnership that’s working to bring Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) to 125+ target communities. This technology will help provide faster, more reliable internet connections to unserved and underserved areas of the United States.

Vice President of State Government Affairs at Connected Nation, Tom Cox, recently spoke to Market Daily Report at RFD-TV about what this project entails.

“We chose the 125 [communities] based on a series of different data points,” Cox said. “We were trying to identify cities where we can build these to lower internet cost and latency for the community.”

IXPs help alleviate costs by creating a more local, and in this joint venture, a carrier-neutral facility which means more open competition. The facilities also lower internet latency, which is the time that it takes data to travel from a source to destination, ultimately increasing end-user speeds. Latency can be directly correlated to the distance between you and your nearest IXP.

Cox encourages members of the 125 proposed target communities—as well as  those who are not on that initial list—to reach out to Connected Nation for more information about building an IXP.

“If your city is not on the list, we encourage you to also reach out and say ‘hey, we are also interested in this,’” Cox said. “We have [already] identified a few regions that weren’t originally on our list, but we found such great partnerships in those communities, we said ‘this is the place to go’.”
