Hays County broadband engagement project to kick off March 7

Hays County, Texas (February 25, 2022) – The Hays County Broadband Committee, along with Connected Nation Texas (CN Texas), invites local stakeholders, community residents, and media to attend a special event on Monday, March 7, at 3 p.m. to learn about the launch of a broadband engagement project designed to expand and improve broadband access, adoption, and use throughout the county. As part of the project, a Technology Action Plan will be developed for the county by leveraging Connected Nation’s Connected Community Engagement Program. The plan will be shaped by information provided by local stakeholders.

The kickoff event will take place at the Hays County Courthouse, located at 111 E. San Antonio St., San Marcos, Texas. Attendees will learn more about broadband access in Hays County, the Connected Community Engagement program, and the project timeline. The meeting will conclude with a Q/A session.

The event will also be livestreamed via Microsoft Teams for those who are unable to attend. The livestream can be accessed here: https://bit.ly/3v4Epww.

“We are excited to move forward with this project and bring connectivity to Hays County,” said Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra.

Every resident, business, community organization, rancher, and public official is encouraged to share their input on the project through a brief survey. The goal of the survey is to identify unique challenges and opportunities for expanding high-speed internet in Hays County so that every family, business, and community organization can access the critical resources needed to be connected.

This project was made possible through funding provided by St David’s Foundation, a nonprofit located in Austin, Texas whose mission is to create healthier lives for all Central Texans by addressing the region’s top health challenges.

The information collected will provide valuable data on broadband usage in the county and aid in the development of a Technology Action Plan that will provide both immediate and long-term solutions for improving internet access. Survey participation is essential to ensure that no area is left out of the plan.

This important survey takes only 10 minutes to complete. Participants are asked to simply choose the survey category or categories that best represent them or their organizations. Surveys can be found here:

"We are excited that Connected Nation is conducting this important survey in Hays County; increased broadband access is extremely important to our residents,” said Hays County Commissioner Lon Shell. “We believe this survey will provide useful information and data that will facilitate improvements in access and usage of broadband services throughout the county."

The Connected Program has been used in more than 650 communities across the country to develop county or regional Technology Action Plans that have both short term and long-term broadband solutions.
