Shelby County committee needs your input on work to improve high-speed internet access and use across county

Shelby County, Texas (February 3, 2021) – The Shelby County Broadband Committee launched today its work to develop a county-specific Technology Action Plan. The committee, in partnership with Connected Nation Texas (CN Texas), is looking at both immediate and long-term solutions for improving high-speed internet access, adoption, and use across the county.

“Having reliable internet impacts everything from remote learning for our kids to telehealth options for our senior citizens to opportunities for our local businesses to grow, so it is critical that we take steps to expand and improve our broadband,” said Shelby County Judge Allison Harbison. “The input provided by local residents, businesses, and community organizations will help inform and shape the development of this county-specific plan that will ultimately help us identify challenges and provide solutions for the entire county.”

Shelby County is among 27 communities that are being selected to participate in a statewide effort led by CN Texas and funded by the Texas Rural Funders—at no cost to the county itself.  As part of this effort, the Committee is asking every individual, business, and community organization to take 10 minutes and fill out this short survey: www.myconnectedcommunity.org/shelby-county-1/

“The best way to address internet challenges in your neighborhood or for your business is to respond to this survey and provide the input we need for creating a solid, well-informed plan,” said Luciana Barr, Retired Educator and Shelby County Advocate. “Take part in this short survey and help us ensure that your area is not overlooked. This is an opportunity for Shelby County residents, businesses, and community organizations to come together and provide a path forward for everyone. All of us need access to the resources and services that the internet can provide.”

The Technology Action Plan, which will be developed by leveraging Connected Nation’s Connected Community Engagement Program, will be shaped by the information provided by local stakeholders. The Connected Program has been used in nearly 400 communities across the country to develop county or regional-specific Technology Action Plans that have both short term and long-term broadband solutions.
